In Other Words

Marriage ReFresh 2010

This year’s marriage enrichment time was planned with a challenging economy and busy schedules in mind.  We got the dates out early, reserved a block of rooms at the Marriott Downtown (to support our community’s newest hotel/only convention center) at a great rate and were able to obtain the speaking expertise of local clinical psychologist, Dr. Tom Bartlett. We enjoyed the fact that his wife, Jemmie was with us as well.  Tom and Jemmie are friends of Pastor Ric and Shirley for many years.  12 couples attended including several couples not from GPC!  We met on the sixth floor in a beautiful suite that included a living room, dining room area and a small kitchen along with a large flat screen HDTV.  The time went fast as we listened to Tom share his experience and knowledge of marriage relationships along with some biblical principles and practical homework/exercises.

After our first session with Tom,  the remainder of the evening was spent playing games, snacking and watching the Olympics together—just enjoying each other.  It would be great if those of you who were there would share their thoughts about what God did in their marriages in our time together along with any thoughts/suggestions about another such event.  Thanks to all for coming and being a part of this wonderful time together!  Marriages are among the most important of life’s relationships and investing in them is money and time well spent.

It was a good weekend. Time did seem to go fast. One thing that really stood out to me...communication...it is always so amazing to me how very differently we are made, men and women and person to person. It is so good to be reminded of taking the time to see our interactions from the perspective of our spouse. Our feelings, thoughts, and interpretations vary so differently sometimes. This weekend challenged me to take the time to view both of our perceptions. I appreciate the compliment that God has given me in Laura. (Note: By "compliment" I do mean the bringing together of differing qualities, not at all a deserving of accolades.)

We enjoyed the opportunity to "refresh" at the end of a busy week. In a home with young children, our conversations often take place in bits and pieces. The time together to talk and laugh and be encouraged in our marriage was great. We found Dr. Bartlett's categories of perpetual conflict and resolvable conflict to be a helpful way to think about conflict in any relationship, but especially marriage. Thanks for planning and getting it all together Ric & Shirley!

Join us as we come together as a community of faith to pray and seek God's leading in our midst for 2012. Four prayer gatherings are planned for Jan. 19, 26, 31 and Feb. 7. All begin at 7pm and will end around 8pm.

These prayer gatherings are not designed to pray for safety and health for us, but rather for courage and discernment in following God's leading as we seek to allow the message of the gospel to transform us and our community.

Hope to see you there.

Hundreds of years ago a movement began. It's a movement that has continued to grow, expand and develop to this very day. It has touched the lives of nearly everyone on the planet. You might be a part of it.

Join us as we explore the stories of the early adopters of this movement and see what happens when passion ignites a movement.

"The Movement" - Sunday mornings beginning at 10:00 am.
